Spotting Steganography in Audacity

Audacity is an open-source audio software, used for audio files. But, it can also be used to hide images. The hiding of in image in an audio file is steganography; this is the art of hiding a message within a message.

So, we have found this file:

Now, it looks like it’s just a normal file, most definitely not anything suspicious right?

We open it anyway and we see this:

We can play this, and nothing suspicious arises. So therefor it HAS to be ok right?

This image is part of a CTF challenge, so we know there’s a flag somewhere.

The spectrogram option allows us to see images. So we click it.

There’s our flag. Now what if this was a terrorist investigation and this was coordinates?

Remember, the key to successful forensics is to always be inquisitive!
